Mary & Moses Green Park is one of the largest neighborhood parks in Tempe and has become one of the most popular parks in Tempe for its vast open space, tennis courts and other features.
The park is named after Mary Green and her son Moses. Mary and Moses are Tempe’s earliest known Black property owners. Mary Green settled near Phoenix after arriving in Arizona in 1868, and Moses, her second child, was born not long after. In 1888, Mary homesteaded 160 acres near the northwest corner of today’s intersection of Rural and Warner Roads. At least three of Mary Green’s six children would live in Tempe, and son Moses would live here the longest – more than 30 years. Moses and his brother, Fred, both farmed and ranched in Tempe. Moses and his second wife, Eunice, had three children who they raised in Tempe, and likely lived a portion of their years in Tempe at the property homesteaded by Mary Green in 1888. Mary passed away at the Phoenix home of one of her daughters in 1912. Moses and his sons likely lived in Tempe until the 1930s, after which they moved to California.
Park size is 11.2 acres.
