Operation Secret Santa delivers first arrest

The unsuspecting grinch swiped the first bait package December 4

Tempe, AZ- On December 15th, 2024, Tempe Police nabbed  28-year-old Roman Lopez after he stole a bait package during Operation Secret Santa.

On November 18, the Tempe Police Department kicked-off Operation Secret Santa to reduce package thefts during the busy holiday season.

The operation includes community outreach and education to reduce the number of property crime victims in the City of Tempe, as well as strict enforcement for those who choose to commit the crimes in our city.    

One of the strategies of enforcement was using “bait” packages with a tracking device.   

On December 4, 2024 one of the bait packages was stolen and the search was on!

Officers and detectives jumped into action and tracked the package into the hands of Roman Lopez, who was found near Baseline Road and Hardy Drive.

The Tempe Police Department will continue efforts to reduce package theft and property crime through the end of December, through Operation Secret Santa.  

Roman Lopez (28 years-old) was arrested for:

  •  1 count of 13-1802 A1 Possession of stolen property
