Zanjero

The zanjero (pronounced sahn-hair'-oh), or water master, was a powerful man who collected assessments for the canal company and controlled the allotment of water to fields. As one Tempe pioneer wrote, the zanjero was the one "who divides the waters from the canal so that justice be done."
