Maria Sotelo came to the Tempe area about 1872. She grew up in Tucson, Arizona. After the death of her father, she moved with her family to land east of Tempe that had been settled by her father and brothers.
She was the granddaughter of Ignacio Sotelo, one of the last commanders of the Presidio of Tubac under Spanish rule, and the daughter of Tiburcio and Manuela Sotelo. She married Winchester Miller in Tempe on January 8, 1873. She was the mother of ten children: Sam, Andrew, Benjamin, Louis, Winchester (Jr.), Clara, Manuela, Sally, Rose, and Lydia; another child died as an infant. She is buried in Double Butte Cemetery.
